Very creative dishes and presentations. Not your typical Indian cuisine. Fine dining with chic ambiance. Service was quick and impeccable. Must try if you want a fusion take on the Indian cuisine. Enough veg options too.
A fantastic Indian fine dining place in SF. Decor was understated and innovative, service was impeccable (big shout out to Shannon - she was incredible) and the food was delicious. We started with the Kolkata Lamb Cutlet. For context, we are from Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and it was as good as it gets - crispy on the outside and amazing flavor of minced lamb meat inside. We also had the Kashmiri Dum Aloo with saffron rice, wheat roti, lamb shank and eggplant raita. Strangely we loved them all which is a rarity for us. The shank was falling off the bones and tastes like long forgotten homemade dish from Bengal. The aloo dum was on the sweeter side and luxurious. The eggplant raita was such a pleasant surprise - more like a chat accompaniment. We finished of with the Rabbdi and it was such a an exquisite dish elevated to another level with the crunchy praline. We will be back....
ROOH was a 10/10 experience, the decor was lovely and server attentive. Lot of unique dishes to choose from as well as your classic Indian options. Felt like an Indian fusion with a western twist, but was surprised to learn this restaurant is also popular in New Delhi! Stand out was the dahi puri, had to order two plates!
My hubby and I came here for dinner two nights ago around 530pm. The restaurant was empty so early so we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves minus a few at the bar. We ordered the mango Lassi, loved the hint of spice and pistachio crumbs on top. We started with the Baby Corn Koliwada, loved the spices. It is the perfect mini bites to start the dinner off. Our mains consisted of the chicken butter masala (must get!) and the Organic Vegetable Kofta with a side of saffron rice. Wow the chicken butter masala thigh meat had tandoor flavor in an onion-tomato based sauce. We also enjoyed the vegetable kofta which was in a dumpling style with potato and cauliflower over saffron squash curry. Every bite was delicious, full of flavor, vibrant colors and beautiful presentation. We would've loved to have dessert but we were stuffed. Highly recommend Rooh for an upscale Indian dining experience!
I'm a self-proclaimed Indian food fanatic, and I usually favor the casual, "down and dirty" restaurants. Fancy Indian places often double the price for the same dishes, leaving me unimpressed. But Rooh They completely changed the game! Innovation Meets Tradition: This restaurant offered a unique experience. The dishes were incredibly creative and beautifully presented, a far cry from the typical Indian fare. We were a group of four, and the wide selection of starters and small plates allowed us to sample a delightful variety. Highlights of the Night: Chili Garlic Crab: This dish was an absolute explosion of flavor! A must-try for seafood lovers. Dahi Puri: This classic street food was elevated to new heights. The combination of textures and tastes was incredible. A Minor Misstep: Our only disappointment was the Vegetable Kofta. While the server explained it contained coconut milk, there was an odd aftertaste that none of us could quite place. As a frequent kofta connoisseur, this was the only dish that fell short of my expectations. Overall Impression: Despite the minor misstep with the kofta, Rooh was a truly delightful experience. The creative and beautifully presented dishes were a feast for the eyes and the palate. Highly recommend checking it out if you're looking for an upscale Indian dining experience!
If there's anything you should take away from this review, it would be that ordering the dahi puri is a MUST!! You're hit with a variety of flavors with every bite. It felt like a fun explosion of flavor in my mouth. I have not had dahi puri before this, but my bar has definitely been set high after my experience here. As for the rest of the food, I would say that the taste is just alright for the price that they charge. The higher prices are probably more so for the presentation than the actual taste of the food. I enjoyed eating the puff. I would say that the puff paired with dahi puri is a great meal. Although, I think I would solely come back for the dahi puri and not much else.
I came here with my husband to celebrate my birthday. Service was not too bad, staff was attentive and kept checking in on us. The dahi puri was probably one of the best, it was very different and refreshing. Khulcha cheddar naan was also good, kind of hard to cut but yummy. The shrimp gongura was the highlight of the day. So flavorful and big juicy shrimp! I don't know how they make it crispy in the outside but juicy on the inside! Hemp seed Cornish Hen was liked by my husband, juicy and tangy. Not too hard and not too tender, the spices also had a kick to it. The beef short rib was excellent! We were hesitant to order this because we already got so much food. Glad we did, flavors were bursting and the meat was so fatty and melts in your mouth. Now for the dish we did not like. I was super excited for the lamb shank nihari! Unfortunately I was disappointed. The flavors were too much. It tastes like cardamom curry. Cardamom is a spice that tastes good in small quantities, it gives the food an essence. But this dish had way too much cardamom flavor, it made it hard to eat and enjoy. It's like having too much salt in your food. We really tried to enjoy this dish. Lastly the cashew praline cake was pretty good. A lot of flavors put together and presentation was good. The cake part was super sweet and flavorful, like a baklava. The ice cream balanced out the sweetness of the dish. The ambiance was a little disappointing, the lights don't match with the environment. It's kind of dark inside and outside light is the main thing. I know restaurants have dim lights sometimes but they also have like covers or stained glass. The lights here looked like desk lamps mounted on the ceiling. Lots of decor in the restaurant, everything is nice, but lights don't match the vibe of the restaurant. I'd recommend this place to try out, food is unique and pretty good. I'd come back to try other dishes.
I came across many websites rating Rooh as one of the best fine dining Indian restaurants in the bay area and after my first visit, indeed it is definitely the best and I want to visit again. I ended up almost ordering most popular items from the menu. Dahi puri: 5/5 - I ordered twice Cashew praline cake: 5/5 - must try Octopus tandoori: 4/5 - felt bit chewy but taste is good mushroom chef special- 5/5 - must try Goat pepper fry- 5/5- nothing special but they nailed it Butter chicken stuffed egg curry- 4/5 i liked the idea and presentation Cheese naan: 4/5 I would definitely visit again just for their dahi puri and cashew praline cake. Service was good and it has got the fine dining restaurant ambiance.
Went here and had the SF restaurant week pre-fixe menu and it was fantastic!!! Definitely high end Indian food and a nicely done interior as well. The courses were well spaced throughout the meal and service was efficient and kind. The nizami sherbet was delicious and had the best presentation with smoke under the cocktail glass. The amuse bouche bonda and puri were yummy, lots of fresh crab and shrimp in the bonda. LOVED the gongura shrimp, as a telugu person I loved seeing it on the menu and enjoyed the gongura and spicy flavors. Thought the shrimp could've been cleaned just slightly better but was fresh and still good. Had the vegetarian keema pav and it was yum. Good texture, well spiced, and enjoyed the sev topping. If you hadn't told me it was impossible meat, I probably wouldn't have realized. The butter chicken (basic item yes, but yummy) was very well made. The chicken was soft and really well cooked. The star was an absolutely delicious lamb pepper fry, the pepper crust in the lamb was so hard to miss. Saffron rice was also delicious with strong saffron flavor. Garlic naan was good as well, standard. I had the coconut leches and it was SO GOOD!! Soft texture, sweet, and fresh coconut tropical flavor. Had a lovely time at rooh! A little pricey but the portions were large for upscale dining. I had to take a Togo box even.
Elevated Indian cuisine in SOMA great for large parties. There is the option to order a la carte or select from one of three set menus (ranging $90-$130/person). We had a party of six that night and opted for the "Epicure Set Menu". It was very much worth $105 per person, as the dishes were portioned according to the size of the party (plates were doubled for us at no extra cost). The assorted papads, crisps, dals, rice, and naan were unlimited. All in all, it was an overwhelming amount of food (in the best way possible). I've included photos of all the items from the set menu below. Standout dishes for me were the masala jackfruit tacos, hemp seed roast cornish hen, dahi puri, traditional butter chicken, and cashew praline cake. These items may be available on their regular menu as well. Overall a solid first dining experience at ROOH, I would come back again!
